Road Warrior Fitness Tips

Being on the road and staying committed to any type of fitness or diet regimen is about as easy as keeping a slick salesman out of a tanning bed….very very difficult. But it doesn’t have to be that way. There are things that you road warriors can do that will help you stay on track and succeed in meeting your fitness goals; whether that’s getting ripped or just losing weight and getting off your blood pressure meds.

In this article I am going to show you what I do when I am on the road for work, and how I plan and prepare in order to stay on track. Having success on the road with your health and fitness is no accident. If you want to win, you gotta plan on it!

Nutrition – Road Warrior Fitness Tips

The reason I address nutrition first is because this is where 80% of your results come from. Many of you know this by now if you have spent any amount of time on my site. I stress this over and over again. But as someone who is on the road, staying committed to a healthy diet is not exactly easy – and I agree!

Most people who travel a lot don’t have the luxury of a kitchen that they can stock with healthy choices. Most of the food you eat is on the go, in a city you aren’t familiar with, or in an airport terminal.

So whats the solution?

There are 3 things that you can do when traveling that will help keep you on track and on pace to meet your goals for nutrition.

#1 Pack your own snacks

You are allowed a small carry on bag in most planes and in addition to that, usually a backpack or laptop bag that can be stored under a seat.

I keep all my supplements (protein powder, Shakeology, creatine, pre-workout, R&R Formula)…I keep all these items in small clear containers in my carry on bag along with a shaker cup. When I have a layover or some opportunity, I mix up a protein shake for a snack, or mix up some Shakeology for a meal replacement.

I also keep a stockpile of protein bars. These are extremely handy when on a 6 hour flight across the country which I am on right now as I am writing this article. So if you see some spelling errors…it was the turbulence, lol. But you can be assured you are getting a healthy snack AND you make sure your body stays fueled every 2.5-3 hours.

So, constantly! – All these items are constantly available in both my carry-on, and laptop bag.

#2 Eating Out

For most people on the road you are more than likely with customers who have a preference for a local restaurant or you just don’t have many options, such as an airport terminal.

The key is food choice. Just because they don’t have “the perfect” item that fits your diet, doesn’t mean you cant still have success.

Be assertive wherever you go, even if your customer suggests a dish – choose a menu item and modify it to fit your goals. Instead of sour dough…ask for whole wheat…instead of the pasta dish you customer recommends, kindly tell him you have some goals that you are really committed to (customers will appreciate your commitment) and then order the house salad and add grilled chicken to it with a vinaigrette on the side.

If your food choice is limited like when you are in an airport terminal – the same thing applies. Modify the menu items to fit your goals. I do it all the time and I never get any kickback from the service.

#3 Tracking Your Nutrition

This should be top priority, especially since you might not always have access to your first choice of healthy food options.

I use the myfitnesspal app on my phone to log everything that I eat on the road because the food choices are just half the battle. The other battle is making sure you hit your nutrient macros…If you are on a fat shredder plan, that’s the 50% protein, 30% carbs, and 20% fats.

YOU HAVE TO LOG WHAT YOU EAT IF YOU HAVE ANY CHANCE AT SUCCEEDING AND REACHING YOUR GOALS WHILE ON THE ROAD…Cant stress that enough.

Fitness – Road Warrior Fitness Tips

I don’t believe anyone has any excuse when on the road, not to workout…There is always, at least a 30 minute time period where you can hop in the hotel gym for a quick workout.

I do my P90X and P90X2 workouts in the hotel gym!! I get some pretty funny looks with the P90X2 moves, but who cares! And you don’t even need the hotel gym. You can rip your dvds right to an ipad or some other tablet and take your workouts everywhere!

One of the coolest things Beachbody has done is recognize that people want to stay committed on the road. So they came out with the P90X iphone app. Its half the cost of the dvds and it’s the same exact workouts you would get on the tv back home, but now its mobile…NO EXCUSES!

Now will you miss workouts while on the road? Yes – just don’t plan on missing your workouts. Instead of looking at your schedule and focusing on why you cant or wont have time to workout, change your mindset and focus on adjusting things so that you can fit in your workout. You change your mindset, and you will find that you have more time than you think to fit it in before that presentation or dinner meeting. For me, most workouts on the road are done after 10pm…that seems to be when things wind down, I am back in the hotel room, and I have time before bed to BRING IT!

I will leave you with a statement that you will probably hear me say quite often…If you fail to plan, then plan on failing…Simple as that.
