So first, lets just cover what exactly P90X is super quick and then we can take a look at X3 and see what that involves!

 

P90X vs P90X3 – A Glance at P90X

 

P90X is probably the most well rounded fitness program on the planet. Dont let that fool you though…There is a reason that so many people have gotten crazy results with P90X…cuz the workouts are CRAZY!

You are going to see incredible resistance training workouts, top shelf cardio, and you even will see Yoga…Yes yoga…And its not that weird spiritual stuff. Its sweat your butt of Yoga-X!

There are actually three different workout plans that you can follow, which include: Classic, Lean, and Doubles. Classic incorporates all aspects of your fitness with a large focus on resistance training using your own body weight. So you will see a lot of pushups and pullups and different variations of those moves. But you will also experience intense resistance moves for your upper body that incorporate the use of bands or dumbbells. The Lean routine focuses slightly more on those who have a goal of losing a lot of fat quickly, but I still suggest people stick with classic and you can learn why in my article on P90X Classic Or Lean. Double is simply the Classic schedule with an added cardio workout 3 days per week.

If you are looking for a time friendly workout, P90X really isnt going to be your cup of tea. Most P90X workouts last about 60 minutes and 3 days per week you add a 16 minute ab workout to those routines for about an 75 minute average workout time. And Yoga-X is 90 minutes!

Some of the equipment required for the program can be expensive or hard to use if you travel quite a bit, but I have found very affordable alternatives at Walmart, Target, or online at Amazon.com.

One thing you might run into though as you progress through P90X is that you will notice your stamina and endurance will increase quickly and some of the cardio workouts might not be as tough as they used to be. At this point I would recommend something like a weighted vest to increase the intensity or maybe even substituting some Insanity on your cardio days.

 

 

…Now lets take a look at P90X3!

 

P90X vs P90X3 – A Glance at P90X3

P90x3 is NOT P90X and its NOT P90X2…The reason P90X has been such a success is because its doable even though its hard. Anyone can jump in and modify the exercises to fit their own ability. You have the success of muscle confusion, the support of the P90X nutrition plan and of course, your team beachbody coach (ME!) CLICK HERE <– if I’m not your free coach yet!

Then you take a look at P90X2 which is sort of a graduate program for people who have completed P90X. You will NOT be able to complete P90X2 effectively if you are not in okay physical shape…the moves are just too demanding. While P90X2 does offer some of the most dramatic results, they are built upon the foundation that P90X lays. And a lot of people saw all the medicine balls, stability balls, crazy upside down pull-ups and just said…no thanks!

Does that mean I cant do P90X3 though???

NO!

The short answer to “What is P90X3″, is that P90X3 is about getting the most done in the least amount of time! Each workout only lasts 30 minutes from buzzer to buzzer. Whats really neat is that recent research is showing that a bulk of your results that you get, regardless of how long you workout…is in the first 30 minutes! On top of the new time-frame of these workouts in comparison to P90X or P90X2, you are going to see some NEW style of workouts like:

  • Pilates
  • Isometrics
  • MMX (MMA style workout)

Basically what P90X3 has done is taken what we know to work well from P90X, P90X2, and added some new things to that to keep it fresh and motivating. But each workout can be modified as well! You cant touch your toes in yoga…touch your shins. You cant do full, unassisted pull-ups…grab a chair. You can do standard push-ups…drop to your knees. P90X3 is still about finding what works best for you…just in less time!

 

 

So is P90X or P90X3 Better?

Its not about which program is better…both programs are founded upon the same foundation: Find what works for you and just press play! Both still involve muscle confusion. Both P90X and P90X3 have a variety of workouts that keep the program fresh and motivating. Both programs show you how to modify according to your current ability.

…But which will get me better results…30 minutes of P90X3 or 60 minutes of P90X?

As I mentioned above – resent research is showing that a bulk of your results come from your first 30 minutes of exercise and anything in addition to that is bonus. “Bonus” meaning that you will increase your results. Its a simple matter of math at this point. You are either burning calories for 30 minutes or burning calories for 60 minutes. You are either getting an amazing resistance workout, or you are getting an elite resistance workout that completely exhausts your muscles for maximum results.

Can you get AMAZING results in just 30 minutes per day with P90X3? Absolutely! You saw the video above!

Can you get even BETTER results in 60+ minutes per day with P90X? Absolutely!

What it comes down to is what works for you! Its not about P90X vs P90X3…its about YOU and YOUR goal and YOUR schedule and YOUR commitment!

What I hate now though is that every time I eat, all I can see in my head is how many colors of each container my food would fit in, lol. Its like a mental color coded tetris game, lol.

But the 22 Minute Hard Corps meal plan is super simple. I will walk you through it step-by-step and then at the end, I will show you a couple vids: One of which will help you when you go shopping at the grocery store for your 22MHC food!

 

22 Minute Hard Corps Nutrition Plan Basics

Step-1: Entrance Questionnaire

Complete the questionnaire and tally up your score to move on to Step-2.

Step-2: Ration Plans

I know this one is going to get a lot of questions, so I will just address it now…A lot of people who I have coached successfully through Tony Horton’s programs, like P90X or P90X3 have started out their journey weighing in at over 200lbs. When a person who weighs that much starts eating at a plan that requires them to be at 2400 calories or more per day…that can be tough! The reason its tough for many overweight folks to eat the much is not because their not used to eating that many calories (obviously), but its because clean food is not calorie dense, its nutrient dense; therefore there is more VOLUME in the amount of food they’re taking in. Thats what takes some getting used to.

As your body’s metabolism increases, it will become easier and easier to cram in that many calories, but until then; whats a reasonable calorie intake that will help you lose weight without sacrificing any muscle loss by dropping down to low? As a general rule for men, I and many others recommend that men do not drop below 1700 calories per day. For women, any less that 1200 is dangerous when doing an intense workout program.

what you’ll notice about the 22 Minute Hard Corps nutrition plan is that the calorie ranges are not extreme. In fact, I recommend that you follow the guidelines below to the T! If you need to drop down your intake because you’re too full all the time; drop down one plan and see how that works for you.

Step-3: Rations

22mhc portions nutrition guideBelow, you’ll see that your Plan has been broken down into 3 meals and 2 snacks. Each meal contains a series of rations that correspond with your Food Lists (you can see the food lists in your 22 Minute Hard Corp nutrition guide). To maximize efficiency of the Nutrition Field Guide, fill each meal with these foods. However, it is not mandatory that you structure your day in exactly this way. Feel free to shift the rations within the day. For example, if you would like to have a piece of fruit for dessert in the evening, you may relocate a breakfast purple to dinner. As long as you eat the required amounts from your assigned food groups, you will see awesome results.

Reasons to Change Your Ration Plan

The situation may arrive where your calorie level no longer suits your needs. As fitness levels increase, this is a common occurrence. Here are some indications that this may be the case.

  • Performance plateau (not getting stronger/faster/better)
  • Results plateau (no longer losing/gaining weight)
  • Inability to perform workouts
  • General lethargy
  • Persistent headaches
  • Low morale
  • Inability to sleep

The most likely solution is to increase calories by bumping up to the next Ration Plan. The reason for this is twofold. First, as fitness increases, the metabolism also increases. Added calories may be needed to fuel performance. Second, when the body is fed insufficient calories in a stress setting (during a demanding exercise program, for example), the metabolism may slow down to preserve energy, resulting in decreased performance and slowed results. Tell us about your life before you started the program. How did you feel about yourself and your body?
I have to admit: I was super clueless before I found Beachbody. I was already exercising, but my diet plan was horrible. I really saw no results whatsoever, and that caused me to give up a lot of times. So for comfort, I told myself I was “fit” and “buff”.

What inspired you to change your life and begin your transformation journey?
My pant and shirt sizes were going up; I was running out of breath; I would sweat more than usual; and I was just uncomfortable with my body. One day I told myself something had to be done, and that same day, I found my Beachbody Coach, Justin Ruble. Finding Beachbody changed so many misconceptions I had about my body. I believed I couldn’t lose any more weight at 230 pounds. I also believed I wasn’t supposed to do intense cardiovascular activities.

What is the greatest challenge you faced before beginning the program? How did the program and Beachbody help you overcome that challenge?
I completed INSANITY, 21 Day Fix, and INSANITY: THE ASYLUM. None of them were tougher than getting up and going to the gym. Hitting play with a scheduled workout program and a Coach always checking up on me gave me the drive to do this every day. Now I feel like a beast.

What in particular did you like about the program you chose?
INSANITY: THE ASYLUM is awesome! It helped me a lot, because I could be feeling down, but once I was 10 minutes in, I had so much adrenaline pumping and so much energy. Shaun T also helped a lot, being the boss trainer that he is.

Describe the results you achieved with your Beachbody program. Which achievements are you proud of?
Before I ever started working out, I was 230 pounds. After INSANITY, I was 176 pounds. Now, after INSANITY: THE ASYLUM, I am 163 pounds and have lost 3 inches off my waist, 3 inches off my chest, and 1 inch off my hips. I’ve gone from regular to beastly.

How has your life changed since completing your Beachbody program?
I feel great about my body; my self-confidence has grown a lot; and I also know better about my body now.

How did participating in a Challenge Group help you reach your goals? How did your group support you and keep you accountable?
The Challenge Group was an awesome resource to keep me in check. We had different tasks each day and had to make daily reports, which helped a lot because I didn’t want to be the slacker holding the group back.

How did your Team Beachbody Coach support you on your journey?
My Coach was always checking up on me. He supported me in so many ways. He gave me tips on what to do, what to eat, and what not to eat. My Coach, Shaun T, and Autumn were my support system throughout the workout.

How did a Beachbody supplement, nutritional product, or program (such as Shakeology or Beachbody Ultimate Reset) support your transformation? What are the greatest benefits you gained? Did you see benefits to your energy, sleep, mood/mental clarity, digestion/regularity?
When I first took Shakeology, I wondered if it was illegal because I would push past my breaking point and then some. It tasted so good and worked great also.

But as it relates to the issue at hand, lets just focus on the question that is going to get you the most bang for your buck: What not to eat before bed.

 

Dispelling the Myth of Eating Before Bed

calories in vs calories outYou hear this all the time, especially from the weight watchers and slim fasters…

“If you eat after 7pm; your body will just store it as fat”

Here’s the thing: When it comes to fat loss there is only one factor that reigns as king and is responsible for a majority of your results. That king is calories. The primary factor in fat loss is calories in vs calories out…its simple math. If you are burning more calories per day than you are putting down the hatch, then you are going to lose weight generally. There are sources of calories that can accelerate that process though. For instance, its the reason a fat shredder diet that is high in protein works so well…your body burns more calories processing protein than it does other forms of macronutrients. Also, not all calories are created equal. Some types of foods can have different hormonal effects and can thwart your fat loss efforts.

But in general, it doesnt matter when you eat those calories so long as your intake is less than your output of calories in any given 24 hours period of time. Well…24 hours is the easiest way to calculate intake vs output to know if you should be making progress.

Since Eating Before Bed IS Safe…Now What?

So now that we can agree that for most people, calories in vs calories out is a good philosophy so long as your not using it as an excuse to eat a double western bacon cheeseburger meal everyday, and call it good cuz you’re under your maintenance intake for the day.

 

Lets Discuss What NOT to Eat Before Bed

what not to eat before bedI am not going to get into the deep science of it, so I am going to keep it simple since thats what makes sense to me. Plus I dont feel like typing and looking up a bunch of scientific words to make you think I’m smart…

Here goes! Within the first few hours of going to sleep, your body is at its highest production of a chemical call Human Growth Hormone (HGH). Its what old dudes take to get back in the game, lol. Its also why body builders put such a high emphasis on rest. This is when your muscles do a majority of their growing.

One of the biggest enemies of HGH is insulin. Insulin is a hormone made by the pancreas that allows your body to use sugar (glucose) from carbohydrates in the food that you eat for energy or to store glucose for future use. Insulin helps keeps your blood sugar level from getting too high. Insulin and growth hormone play antagonist roles against one another.  When one is elevated, the other will be low.

So when you have that bowl of lucky charms, or cinnamon toast crunch, or pop tarts because you’re all about that IIFYM lifesyle…right before you go to bed, you’re doin your guns a disservice.

Here is my general rule of thumb on eating before bed

I try not to eat more than 25g of carbohydrates within 30 minutes of going to bed. I dont always follow that rule 100% of the time, but its a general guideline that I follow most the time so that when I do hit the sack, I know the growth hormone that is released will be effective and not fighting against insulin levels.

 

So What SHOULD I Eat Before Bed?

Protein for GAINS! Researchers in the Netherlands have shown that consuming 40 grams of casein post-exercise, but within 30 minutes of going to bed, resulted in greater muscle protein synthesis. More recently, a study in the Journal of Nutrition showed a that a protein supplement (27.5 grams of protein, 15 grams of carbohydrates, and 0.1 grams of fat) ingested before sleep led to an increase in muscle mass and strength during a 12-week resistance-training program, If you’re rockin one of Tony Horton’s P90X workouts…this is some golden nugget info right here!
