What Is A P90X Plateau?
The P90X Plateau is actually this mountain that Tony Horton forged with his own bare hands and its perfectly flat on top. He spoke it into existence with his witty jokes and motivational speech. Then using his shear brawn, created a perfectly flat surface on which to practice his advance yoga moves on…
Seriously…he did it!
But in reality, if you have completed a full round of the X then you are most likely familiar with what a P90X plateau is.
We naturally measure progress through a few numerical standards:
- body fat %
- rep count
- weight used on exercises
If any of those factor remain at a constant for a longer than desired period of time…You are probably experiencing a plateau, i.e. a flat line on a graph of progress.
Why Did I Hit This P90X Plateau?
There are actually a few factors that can impact your progress or keep it stagnant. But the primary cause of your P90X plateau is actually your body fighting against you.
Our bodies hate change and they will do whatever they have to do in order to avoid it. Your body’s a creature of habit, but it doesn’t care whether those habits are bad or good. The more you do something to enact change, the more your body adapts and tries to limit that change. This stubbornness is know as your body’s set point – which I actually wrote about in depth in my article called Not Getting Results With P90X.
4 Ways You Can Shatter Your P90X Plateau
Its tough to determine why you have hit a plateau, but luckily…there are only a few reasons why you aren’t making the progress you would like to see.
- You’re eating too much
- You’re eating too little
- Macros are off
- Working out too hard
- Not working out hard enough
- Not sleeping enough (recovery)
Some of these are simple and you will know exactly what you are doing wrong and why you have hit a P90X plateau, but lets take a look at some of the solutions to the issues above.
#1 Increase Or Decrease Calorie Intake – I actually experienced this one personally. As you progress through P90X, you are going to become a fitter more healthier you that requires more fuel to operate at peak efficiency. The simple act of adding 300-500 calories per day to your calorie intake will stoke the fire so to speak and you will blast through that P90X plateau like an out of control wrecking ball! You will want to play around with that number as well and find out what works for you by monitoring how you feel. If 500 is leaving your energy levels depleted, bump it up to 600. If 500 feels like too much, then knock it down to 300. Listen to your body and find what works.
#2 Get Precise – If you you have not calculated your nutrition and are not tracking your nutrition with precision with the aid of a tool like myfitnesspal.com, then you will not any movement from your plateau . . . period!
You need to go to the Nutrition Zone tab and go through every single step that I have set up for you and learn how to get serious with your eating. You want to eat in a way that works FOR YOU and not against you – which is why eating with precision is so important in getting results with P90X. Especially dramatic results.
#3 Kick It Up/Take It Down A Notch – There are two camps of people who have plateaued in their P90X journey that need a workout intensity solution.
The first camp of P90X plateau people just plain and simply need to kick it up a notch. You arent challenging yourself! There is a reason Tony Horton says, do your best and forget the rest. Really push your body to its limits and dont second guess what your body is capable of even in its current condition because it just might surprise you! Bump up the weights too!!! Challenge yourself!
The second camp are the one who come out of the gates on the P90X Doubles Schedule. You are just insane, lol! If you are BRINGIN IT too much then your body actually has less time to recover or cant recover well enough if you are pushing way too hard during your workouts. Take some time to focus on your form and technique. This will keep intensity high and give your body a chance to repair and make gains.
#4 Get some ZZZ’s – This is when all the magic happens. This is when your muscles repair themselves and grow. It is commonly misunderstood that your workouts make your muscles grow, when in fact it is during rest that they are repairing and growing.
The number one reason sleep is important is because Growth Hormone (HGH) rises during deep sleep, which often begins about 30-45 minutes after falling asleep. HGH, or Human Growth Hormone is an amino acid produced in the pituitary gland of the brain, and it plays an important role in repairing muscle tissue. If you are depriving yourself of sleep, not only are you going to feel lousy, but your results will suffer too.
