The Healthiest Whey!

As I move forward in my health/fitness journey, I am constantly looking for better, more natural, higher quality products to fuel my body with. What I have found that really surprised me, is that many of the protein whey supplements I am using currently, include artificial sweeteners. Now I eat around 230g of protein per day currently and about 100g of that comes from protein supplements. I became very concerned and decided to do a little more research on artificial sweeteners, primarily sucralose, which is found in many protein whey brands. And here is what I have found:

James Bowen, M.D., A physician, biochemist, and survivor of aspartame poisoning warns about yet another synthetic sweetener, Splenda.

Hawaii, May 8, 2005 — The chemical sucralose, marketed as “Splenda”, has replaced aspartame as the #1 artificial sweetener in foods and beverages. Aspartame has been forced out by increasing public awareness that it is both a neurotoxin and an underlying cause of chronic illness worldwide.Dr. James Bowen, Researcher and biochemist, reports:

“Splenda/sucralose is simply chlorinated sugar; a chlorocarbon. Common chlorocarbons include carbon tetrachloride, trichlorethelene and methylene chloride, all deadly. Chlorine is nature’s Doberman attack dog, a highly excitable, ferocious atomic element employed as a biocide in bleach, disinfectants, insecticide, WWI poison gas and hydrochloric acid.

You can read much more about these frightening effects of the artificial sweetener, sucralose, by clicking the link to the article above. Do your research gang!

So how do I choose the best whey protein?

  1. Avoid sucralose like the plague. Your vital organs will thank you.
  2. Choose a whey that is sweetened with stevia (steviol glcosides) instead. This is a natural sweetener that is derived from the stevia plant which there are about 240 species of.
  3. If possible, get whey that is made from grass-fed cows since they are not treated with antibotics or recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH). These hormones can make there way into the whey product.
  4. The less ingredients the better!

What if I cant afford the “healthiest whey protein”?
This is a question that I had to ask myself too. I finally came to the conclusion that price needs to decrease in importance and my quality of health needs to increase. I can pay $0.50 per serving for a protein whey with artificial sweeteners that will damage my body, or I can pay $1.00 per serving for a whey that I know my body will be able to use effectively without damaging me in the long run. I am sure the lack of doctor bills in the future will balance the budget though.

Whey protein alternatives

I have also been doing some research on animal based proteins and the effect they have on your body’s pH levels. If you havent read my article Intro to pH Balance, you need to read it so that you understand what you put in your body does to your body!!! The more you know, the wiser choices you can make. My goal is not going to be to have everyone stop taking whey and become hacky sackin vegans, but I want people to make the BEST choices possible in order to maximize not just your results, but your health too. I want our insides lookin as good as the outside, lol!

Okay, so you have read Intro to pH Balance and you now understand that dairy (whey), and certain animal proteins can have acid-forming effects on your body which promote bacteria/disease growth, tumor growth, weight gain, osteoporosis, and many more negative effects. So what exactly are the alternatives? Plant based proteins are a great alternative to whey. Pea protein promotes tissue repair, is free of soy and soy’s side effects, contains no gluten, and its easy to digest and absorb. I will be using Nutra Summa’s Pea Protein. I will also be writing a full review once I have finished a tub of it.

I just want to encourage you all to make the healthiest choices. All the work we do to get visible results overshadow what is even more important…your health. I want you to be the 80 year old runnin a marathon, or that old guy who barefoot skis still! Its about a quality of life gang, not just getting ripped. Do I want you to get ripped? HECK YES! Getting RIPPED has been an awesome ride for me. The thrill of seeing what your body is capable of is so rewarding! But at the same time, again, I want your insides lookin as good as your outsides!!! So GET OUT THERE, GET RIPPED RESULTS, and do it the healthiest way possible!
